Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Friday, March 4

Today we got up early and had an early breakfast. Then we got on the bus to go on our tour to see the Penguins!

It was a 2.5 hour drive but seemed to go by pretty quickly. Our guide grew up in the area and explained a lot about the economy and history of the area.

Guanacos! The guanaco is an animal native to the arid, mountainous regions of South America. They are found in the altiplano of Peru, Bolivia and Chile . In Argentina, they are more numerous in Patagonian regions, as well as in places such as the Torres del Paine National Park, and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. In these areas, they have more robust populations, since grazing competition from livestock is limited. A guanaco’s typical lifespan is 20 to 25 years

The terrain reminded us of what we might see in the high desert area of California. They have have a drought as well but it’s pretty normal here as they typically get very little rain.

We stopped at a gas station and got some local snacks which Susan didn’t care for but Adam thought was OK.

We made it to the penguin place at noon and we walked along the LONG path where the penguins were. The penguins were in their little burrows all along the walkway. They weren’t afraid of people and there were tons of them. We were told that their babies had just reached the age of going out to sea so they were resting after having taken care of them.

We took lots of pictures and looked around in a tiny shop they had but nothing interested us. Overall it was really nice.

We then took the long bus ride back and got on the ship an hour before sail away.
