Skagway, Alaska 2022

Docked in Skagway.
It’s a port tradition that the first time a ship docks in Skagway – that the cruise paints a tag on the wall of their ship, Some of the tags get fancy with logos and captain’s names – and some are simple
More of the ship tags.
More tags – interestingly about 2 weeks after our cruise, there was a rockslide that carved a big swath in the hillside. A big boulder hit the Discovery Princess that was docked there. Fortunately it was around 6:30 am and folks hadn’t started disembarking yet for their day in Skagway – otherwise someone could have been seriously injured!

We explored town a bit before our excursion.
Downtown Skagway
After we explored town a bit, David headed back to the ship to get ready for our excursion. Adam and I took the shuttle – and missed out on this beautiful scene that David was treated to on his way back.
David passed the White Pass train on his way back to the ship.
More of the great scenery on David’s walk back to the ship.

Our excursion today is called “Historical City, Liarsville Gold Panning & Salmon Bake.” It takes place at a spot where we are told the gold rush participants would camp to prepare for their harrowing journey into the Yukon. There are some rich stories about the area and people who were there. Now the tour employs some fun actors and actresses who act out some of the stories and put on an entertaining song and dance. Then we were treated to gold-panning (with a ‘loaded’ pan already containing a tiny amount of gold) and after that a yummy Salmon bake.

Beautiful Falls nearby.
On our way back to the ship — our tour driver pulled over in a great photo-stop area with a nice panoramic view of Skagway and the ships in dock.
Closer shot of the ships
The area is so pretty!
After our photo stop – our driver took us to a nearby cemetery – because behind it is a pretty waterfall to photograph.
Back to the ship – for a special treat!!
Puppies!! This is our cruise director with one of the puppies that came to visit. We all got an opportunity to hold one. It was nice to get a “Puppy fix!”

I think almost everyone on the ship wanted a chance to hold a puppy – they were sled-dogs from a nearby sled team owner. They were cute! Here are some photos of us holding them…

Time to leave Skagway – Before we knew it, it was time to leave. The captain blew the ‘loveboat’ horn and off we sailed!
Pretty evening!

Just about everywhere you look – is like a postcard – we had beautiful conditions.

Next is Glacier Bay National Park!
